event date:
Friday, 26 October 2018 - 5:30pm to 8:00pm

Warrnambool Art Gallery and Director Vanessa Gerrans welcome you to the opening of:

SWTAFE End of Year Exhibition

The annual South West TAFE (SWTAFE) Visual Arts Graduating Exhibition showcases the bold and diverse practices that are bustling in South West Victoria. This group show is a glimpse into the processes and conceptual developments of each student, orchestrated under one coherent and tactile space. The high calibre of works on display reflect this critical moment in their career, as they transition from student to thriving emerging artist, and begin their respective journeys.

Smile. Walk away.

Smile. Walk away. is a gestural response to the ways that people react to smiles in the public sphere. Using textiles and pattern, the exhibition explores the aesthetics of chaos and order, order and feelings of security and exposure that smiles in the public sphere can conjure. It is also a reflection on smiles as a positive gesture; as a powerful human expression of hope, happiness and compassion that has the ability to break people out of their own bubble of existence. Lisa is the recipient of the 2017 Peter Lucas Memorial Art Prize is an annual award sponsored by the WAG that provides a student from the SWTAFE with an annual mentorship and exhibition space, providing invaluable support for emerging artists and a platform to launch a career in the arts.
