WAG is grateful for the kind assistance of the many lenders who have contributed paintings and objects to this exhibition. In particular, we acknowledge the contribution of Dr David G. Lance for his enthusiastic involvement in creating this tribute to his great-great-grandfather.

With broad interests and skills as a technician, inventor, entrepreneur, painter, arts commentator, sportsman, writer, musician and bandmaster, Lance was a true renaissance man. His inquiring intellect was matched to a talented can-do approach and an enthusiastic determination. From the 1870s, much of his energy was directed to championing the visual arts in Warrnambool by creating opportunities for the public to see, experience and study art. Indeed, Lance was instrumental in establishing the Warrnambool Art Gallery, becoming the inaugural Director in 1892. Ripening Sunbeams is presented in recognition of his enlightened contribution to early Warrnambool and to the ongoing legacy of his many and varied achievements.
