Michelle Hamer: 2020 is Cancelled

Michelle Hamer
Saturday, 14 November 2020 to Sunday, 28 February 2021
George Lance Gallery

In her new series “Relax, We’re Doing Great” Victorian artist Michelle Hamer explores the grittiness and confusion of the global pandemic. In hand-stitched mini billboard panels with changing skyscapes, she captures the clichés and contradictions of the ubiquitous messages that have joined and divided us globally. Her work brings an intimate tactile quality to phrases gathered from signage, media, and the language of national and international leaders.

WAG Wants to Hear From You

We are inviting the public to answer the question: Why wouldn't you cancel 2020?

Given the tumultuous and challenging year that it was due to the COVID-19 pandemic; if you could would you cancel 2020? Or perhaps you noticed or experienced a silver lining, learning or signs of hope in an otherwise difficult situation. Experiences of this time are many and varied and have affected people in vastly different ways. We want to know in 280 characters or less: Why You Wouldn’t Cancel 2020? Selected responses will be used in a publication to support and promote the exhibition, and if your response gets published we’ll send you a free copy.

If this has raised concerns for you or anyone you know please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.
