Smile. Walk away.

Sometimes, when walking past others, I smile. To me it’s a simple act of courtesy, an acknowledgment of the shared presence of two people at a certain place at a certain time and gesture of our common humanity. However, despite the good intentions behind the act of smiling is not always received as a positive gesture. Rather they are often interpreted as an affront, an attack, a sign of violence from which others recoil.

Smile. Walk away. is a gestural response to the ways that people react to smiles in the public sphere. Using textiles and pattern, the exhibition explores the aesthetics of chaos and order, order and feelings of security and exposure that smiles in the public sphere can conjure. It is also a reflection on smiles as a positive gesture; as a powerful human expression of hope, happiness and compassion that has the ability to break people out of their own bubble of existence.
