The Junior Warrnibald Prize 2020



WAG and WDEA Works invite entries to the Junior Warrnibald Prize 2020 – a portrait competition, just like The Warrnibald Prize, but for artists aged 18 and under.

Artists can submit a portrait of anyone in their lives who they look up to. The subject must know and have a relationship with the artist, for example the artist’s subject could be a parent, a grandparent, a foster carer, a neighbour, a friend, a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, or a shop owner
Portraits will be exhibited in a virtual exhibition online

All entrants must comply with the following entry instructions and conditions

Entries to the Junior Warrnibald Prize 2020 must be by artists aged 18 and under.

Key dates
Artworks must be submitted by 5pm Friday 26 June 2020
Online exhibition opens on 26 June 2020 to Sunday 12 July 2020 on the WAG website Winners will be announced at a live online special event 1-2pm on Sunday 12 July 2020

Making and Submitting your Portrait

  • One artwork only per entrant
  • Can be vertical or horizontal
  • Any art materials or combination of art materials may be used
  • The artwork must be two-dimensional
  • Artwork must not be self-portraits
  • The artwork must be photographed and submitted as a digital file saved as a JPG no larger than 5 megabytes in file size
  • Fill in and submit the entry form online ensuring that a parent or legal guardian has signed permission for entry

An Explore, Learn, Create – from Home resource can be downloaded from the WAG website. This can be used to help you learn more about portraits and explore some of the portraits in WAG’s Collection. Then use your own imagination and creativity to make your own portrait of someone who inspires you

Tips for photographing artworks

  • Place the artwork on or against a white paper or neutral background
  • Photograph it in an area where there is plenty of natural light. Soft, diffused light is better than direct sunlight
  • Make sure your artwork is in focus


Entrants will be eligible to receive a prize in the artist’s age group. First and second prizes will be awarded in five age groups:

  • Up to age 5
  • Ages 6-8
  • Ages 9-11
  • Ages 12-15
  • Ages 16-18

First prize winners in each age group will receive a cash prize of $100. Second prize winners in each age group will receive a Darrian Office Choice Art Gift Voucher valued at $50
A special prize will also be awarded to one artist whose work displays outstanding creativity. This winner will receive a cash prize of $100 and the opportunity to work with a local graphic designer to create a children’s mascot for WAG


Entries will be judged by a selected panel according to the following criteria:

  • The relevance of the submitted artwork to the theme, as decided by the judges
  • Artistic interpretation of the theme, as decided by the judges
  • The originality of the submission

Judges will be announced on or before 26 June 2020
