Childrens Week 2020

Weenhirr (Messenger)

WAG is proud to present Children’s Week 2020. Supporting this year’s theme of, ‘Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others’, our series of events explores cultural identity, self-expression and community. A number of free resources, including videos and activities, allow children and their families to experience Weenhirr (Messenger), an exhibition featuring a number of local Aboriginal artists who have responded to objects in the Collection.

In light of Covid-19 you can enjoy all of our Children’s Week activities from the comfort of your own home or school.

As a starting point, please watch the video of Sherry Johnstone, our Curator of Cultural Engagement, taking you on a short guided tour of Weenhirr. Then follow the activities to further explore the artists’ work and create your own pieces.

NB. You will notice that some of the spelling of Aboriginal words is different in different activities. We have used the spelling and wording that each artist has chosen themselves and there is sometimes variation in how the words are spelled.
