The Small Things That Inspire Us

Warrnambool photographer Rosana Sialong has always enjoyed exploring the small stories that are hidden in paintings.  She starts by studying the larger work, then looks in the textured paint for small figures, animals and hidden scenes. Here are some of her photographs of works in our collection that reveal the painter’s hidden worlds within worlds.

Figures from The Mahogany Ship, Thomas Clark, n.d., oil on canvas, 32.0 x 64.0 cm

(coastal scene with two figures and a dog viewed from a cave), Thomas Clark, c. 1850's, oil on canvas, 43.3cm x 68.6cm

Figures from The Wentworth Falls, J.H. Carse, 1873, oil on canvas, 61.9 x 107.6cm
