Beth and Amber King

Water colour and ink on canvas
16-year-old Amber King was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier this year, embarking on what will be a long and heroic journey into life's unknown. Amber will spend the next 12 to 24 months at The Royal Children’s Hospital receiving lifesaving treatment, away from family and friends. I created this portrait of Amber and her mother Beth to explore the beauty that is evident in courage, the warmth of a mothers love, and the growth we experience during hardship. Amber’s mother Beth shaved her head when Amber began chemotherapy, gaining strength yet shedding grief; a blossoms petal.

In times of need we lean on those we love to battle the push and pull of tide in front of us. Our mothers help us grow and bloom, and here we see this in Beth. Proceeds of this work will be donated to Beth and Amber’s charity to assist in accommodation, mobility and medical care.
