Presentation & Forum: Free as a Bird: Disability + Indigenous + Institutional Abuse

event date:
Monday, 11 September 2017 - 11:00am to 12:00pm

In ‘Free as a Bird: Disability + Indigenous + Institutional Abuse’ Jane welcomes you to listen to her story and self-advocacy journey.

Jane has given evidence at the Royal Commission into Institutional responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and supported others to give evidence too. Jane lived in institutions from when she was 6 months old, in conditions she describes as ‘like a jail’. From the age of 6 until she turned 21, she experienced sexual abuse and emotional torment by more than more perpetrator.

After leaving institutions as an adult, she went on to live in an abusive relationship for 16 years. She now has a home of her own and is ‘free as a bird’ from those who impacted her earlier life.
