The Warrnambool Art Gallery (WAG) and Western District Employment Access (WDEA) invite entries to The WARRNIBALD2018. The ‘Warrnibald’ is a non-acquisitive open-entry portraiture exhibition and art prize run jointly between WDEA and WAG. Portrait subjects are those who have made contributions in the areas of local culture, charity, business, science, health, education, sport or politics in South-Western Victoria, nationally or internationally. The Warrnibald helps raise funds to support WDEA’s Artlink Program: an initiative that assists people with a range of abilities identify and achieve their creative goals, and promote the inclusivity of everyone in community life.

The Warrnibald

Now in its 3rd year at WAG, the exhibition and art prize seeks to continue to foster community spirit and celebrate those who have contributed to our rich and diverse community. The Warrnibald provides WDEA , a community owned and managed disability employment provider, with the works displayed at their Artlink Gallery at 241 Koroit St, Warrnambool with vital funding to support the continued operation of the ArtLink Program, with 100% of entry fees and 50% of artwork sales going directly to WDEA to keep the program open.

The Warrnibald Portrait Prize was established as a way of recognising both the skills of our many local artists and providing a platform to recognise individuals who have made significant contribution to the fabric of South-West Victorian communities.

Warrnambool has a strong connection to The Archibald Prize which was established by Jules François Archibald (JF) and first awarded in 1921. JF’s father, Joseph Archibald was sergeant of police in Warrnambool and described as ‘enlightened, sober and sceptical’, founded the Warrnambool Art Gallery 130 years ago in 1886. As with its inspiration, The Warrnibald Prize fosters portraiture as well as supporting artists and perpetuating the memory of great local identities.

The WDEA ArtLink Program

The ArtLink program operates to support people with a disability or those experiencing disadvantage to express their artistic flair in a way they enjoy, and to produce works they have full ownership of. Artlink currently operates at 11 Albert St, Warrnambool on Mondays and Tuesdays amongst many other activities in a vibrant space created by the 17 artists who participate in it. Visitors are welcome and volunteers are encouraged to assist the artists to achieve their artistic goals.
