Warrnambool artist Barry Tate’s work is enigmatic. His sculptural ceramics comment on current issues in contemporary Australian society such as bush fires, floods, politics and religion. In Casino Cathedral, Tate combines his childhood fascination of religious iconography, architecture and its opulence which was nurtured by his catholic upbringing with his growing social concerns about the monetisation of religion and the devastation of climate change. Immersive and an often humorous, a glamorised altar is prepared to worship a boat – a symbol of global trade and wealth production, as it falters under the weight of its own grandeur, while we sit idly by.
