The Edge of Forever

Gus Franklin is a Warrnambool-based composer, producer, sound artist and fundamental member of the widely acclaimed, ARIA-nominated group Architecture in Helsinki. For The Regional,  he debuts a site-specific sound intervention—an intricate web of field recordings and generative compositional techniques modulated algorithmically by scientific data—which transforms the gallery’s foyer into an intimate and immersive auditory experience.

In The Edge of Forever,  Franklin explores his hometown of Port Fairy in south-west Victoria on the lands of the Eastern Maar peoples, a place of rich cultural history and socio-political complexity. The work serves as a sonic love letter, a critical reflection and an interrogation of the notion of home. Recordings of natural phenomena act as the catalyst for compositions of harmonic and tonal sounds linked to the sites of the recordings. Activated by each listener, the composition never repeats itself, inviting audiences into a real and imagined ephemeral sound-world anchored deeply in place.
