Tower Hill, a dormant volcano located just outside of Warrnambool, is a site of rich history. For the Gunditjmara, their knowledge encompasses the last eruptions of Tower Hill, but for European settlers, their turbulent history with this site begins in the 1830s when a good water supply and fertile soils drew them here.
In 1855 pastoralist James Dawson commissioned Eugene von Guerard to capture 'one of the most beautiful and interesting specimens of an extinct volcano in Victoria'. In this program students will explore the story of Tower Hill and how this artwork informed the revegetation of this treasured landmark.
Students will be engaged to explore ideas and observations and consider the manner in which von Guerard and other artists have depicted Tower Hill. They will explore local histories in response to museum objects and artworks with a focus on Science Inquiry skills before responding to the artworks in a fun filled creative exploration in the studio.
