Creative Victoria’s First Peoples Direction Circle – coming to venue near you in June

First Peoples artists and creative organisations across Victoria are invited to join Creative Victoria’s First Peoples Directions Circle for a series of informal knowledge-sharing sessions in Mildura, Warrnambool, East Gippsland, Shepparton, and metropolitan Melbourne.

Members of the Directions Circle, together with Creative Victoria’s First Peoples Team, will hit the road throughout June, at galleries, arts centres and hubs to hear from the local First Peoples creative communities – and share information on forthcoming opportunities and events.

The sessions are open to First Peoples content makers, creators, arts workers, creative organisations as well as those who work closely with First Peoples creatives. Whatever your artform or creative practice, you are welcome to come along.

Chair of the First Peoples Directions Circle, Dr Vicki Couzens said: “I’m excited for First Peoples Directions Circle (FPDC) members to get out and about on Country and meet with Mob. There is nothing like sitting and yarning with a cuppa tea, and hearing about what’s happening out in our communities.

“Through our roadshow, FPDC can share our yarns and experiences about what we have been doing to represent and most importantly how community can contribute and be part of the work further, into 2022 and beyond.”

The Creative Victoria First Peoples Directions Circle was established in 2019 to embed Aboriginal self-determination and community voice throughout the development and implementation of Victoria’s creative industries strategy, Creative State 2025. The Directions Circle plays a vital leadership role in the development and delivery of initiatives to support and strengthen First Peoples arts, culture and creative industries in Victoria.

These sessions are designed to gain insight from local creatives about their professional aspirations and priorities, their art form and the creative community in their region. This will help inform Creative Victoria’s work and how it can best support the industry.

The roadshow is an opportunity to ask questions, share your experience and hear about Creative Victoria’s First Peoples focused funding streams, and events such as the First Peoples Creative Industries Forums and the inaugural Victorian First Peoples Art & Design Fair.

Information will also be provided on the upcoming Expression of Interest process to appoint new members of the First Peoples Directions Circle.

“With the programs on offer through FPDC contributions in the Creative State 2025 strategy, we see the foundations set in place and our creative industries sector placed to flourish,” said Dr Couzens.
